Mindy wrote this story about fire and firefighting to protect the pine barrens. When you purchase a copy the proceeds go directly to Quality Parks. The Book Cover is by Lillian Ulman, Illustrator, who writes:
I got interested in doing this project for Quality Parks when my brother, a volunteer firefighter, asked me to help out with this book. I was very glad to help out in any way that I could. I care very deeply for our brave firefighters and our environment.
As an artist, I portrayed the scene the way I did - like "before" on the left where everything is bright and beautiful, and then how quickly the fire changed everything down to the burnt grass.
I had Sandy, the main character, face the fire with her back towards us in deep thought leaving the reader to wonder what she is thinking.
Sandy is also painted in very soft pastel colors - surreal like in a daydream.
