Quality Parks volunteers removed litter along a section of Whiskey Road, between Wading River Hollow Road and Currans Road on November, 12 & 14, 2011. Pictured below is the Quality Parks Board Member, Deborah Boudreau, filling up a trash can, under the Quality Parks Adopt -A-Highway sign.
Barry Orkin, Kenny Spadafora, and Mindy Block also helped pick up nearly a dozen bags of trash, reported illegal dumping, and considered organizing an Alliance of Friends for Rocky Point Parks.
They also checked out the trees pictured below which were planted with the help of Carol Corcoran, and Timberland crew, post 1995 wildfires. The planted pitch pines are now way over Kenny's head.
And spotted this tire dump on state lands too. If you want to help pick up these tires, on our next outing, let Mindy know.

These tires, pictured below, were huge and too big for them to "bag up," though they did manage to roll a 4th tire to the pile, shortly after this photograph was taken.
Dumped construction debris, as pictured below, was too heavy to bag up, and instead, either the Town of Brookhaven or the NYSDEC, will have to remove the roadside debris. "This debris is especially dangerous to drivers," Kenny Spadafora pointed out.
More construction debris in need of removal, at Parking Lot 18.
Nearly half a dozen trash bags will be ready for pickup.
After the clean up, Kenny and Mindy did some additional volunteer work for the Long Island Greenbelt Conference's Monday Crew, checking out the conditions of the hiking trail leading south.
Kenny Spadafora is pictured below examining one of two dumped transformers that was found south of the hiking trail.

Barry Orkin has already contributed this piece of news - - another park in Rocky Point in need. Contact Quality Parks, if you are interested in this future cleanup.
Quality Parks would also like to thank the Town of Brookhaven, the NYSDEC, the Long Island Pine Barrens Commission Staff and Law Enforcement Council, and many others who are also helping to keep this busy road clean.

Where is it safe to leave your car when visiting the park off of Rocky Point Landing Road? I saw NO PARKING signs in one area along the park.
ReplyDeleteWe're aware of this issue! Ray and I checked it out several years ago. Barry Orkin wants a cleanup.
ReplyDeleteAlas, based on my meetings and phone calls of last week, I think we should first work on a letter of support stating our concerns, and rallying interests. And to use this letter as a best course of action because these concerns overlap several town departments and it's not easy.
Further these concerns need to come more than a few of us. So do contact me by phone - 631-473-6760 to further discuss. I appreciate your comments!
- Mindy, and always Ray, in love, spirit, and inspiration.
