Seagulls Flock To Port Jefferson

Ever since the last big storm, the nor'easter that pelted the beach, wrecking bathing facilities, seagulls flocked to Port Jefferson. At least that was true the last time we visited the beach, one week since the nor'easter.

Huge Number of Waterfowl Being Spotted (Long Island Sound, NY)

An unusually large number of waterfowl visited Port Jefferson vicinity this January Thaw. This was just after I learned about the winter waterfowl count being organized by New York State's Ornithological Society (NYSOA) from Jim Ash, South Fork Natural History (SOFO) Executive Director.

We spotted these sanderlings out towards Port Jefferson Harbor, west of the big rock. And below we spotted a Brant flock spread out between Belle Terre and Port Jefferson's East Beach.

Rocky Point Cliffs Nature Preserve Needs Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup

After I posted, Quality Parks Adopts Road To Keep Pine Barrens Cleaner. it took several phone calls to the Town of Brookhaven, some online searching, and finally a visit to Rocky Point to find what Barry's comment was about:

"I have a trail near my house which is only about half a mile long, but my wife and I like it. Unfortunately, there is a lot of trash—cans, bottles bags, etc. The trail is particularly nice because it ends on a cliff overlooking the Long Island Sound. The cliff itself has quite a lot of debris." - Barry
