"Join us this Saturday, 12/2 at 12:00 PM for a protest rally against the clear-cutting of Pine Barrens forest for solar farms. The rally will take place near the site of one of the proposed solar factories: 598 Weeks Ave., Manorville."
I find it to be a chess game, but the game board is not virtual. Yes, we have to worry about climate change, and, yes, we need to protect biodiversity. Biodiversity means saving half the earth from development so as to save 85% of it's native plants and wildlife . Here's the rub, if we had only done things perfectly, we would've planned before we built. Then there would be no need to play chess.

With an onslaught of wildfires in the LA area over the summer, and the upcoming fire prevention week this October, what better time than now to protect life, property, and the environment? Last year, I applied for the Wildland Resource Planner with the Orange County Fire Authority, making it through to the first round of interviews. (Note: Pictured above is a presuppression bulldozing, which Quality Park is protesting, learn more at Flanders County Park.)
I qualified for this LA interview because I had gained experience as a firefighter in Long Island Pine Barrens and with the Port Jefferson Fire Department. For a brief moment in time, I put my life on the line, to better understand what it takes to protect our communities as a structural firefighter, and to protect the fire-prone pine barrens as a forest friendly firefighter. I wrote about these experiences in Sunrise Fire , published in 2008, by Quality Parks.
And it is still relevant today, according to a 2017 National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) report. Some of the key findings include needs to transition away from traditional structural firefighting, so as to include more consistent Wildland/WUI training practices . Sunrise Fire is a story about five young adults who join the fire service to reduce their community's risk from fire. It details information on fire prevention, safety, and training for both wildland fire and structural firefighting, combining science & fiction into an exciting adventure story.
