"Massapequa Preserve, as 3 distinct areas, has a diversity of concerns. Overall, there is no on-site steward of this huge preserve and no restroom facilities at all. Of most concern south of Sunrise to Merrick Rd is the consumption of native species by invasive species. North of Sunrise, the concern is safety and the installation of security cameras. Of special note, the Eastern side of the trail shows horrific signs of neglect. North of Jerusalem Ave is the most natural, even with some invasive species present. The stream-gage building along the east side of this trail was an eyesore. There was trash noted everywhere in the preserve."
Friends of Massapequa Preserve - "Richard Schary began the meeting by recalling how bad conditions were in the preserve when the all-volunteer organization first started in 2000. The group was disturbed by the vandalism, dumping, litter, fires, homeless people and overall neglect throughout the preserve. Visitors were upset by what they observed, but didn’t know what to do or who to contact about it. That’s when a group of concerned citizens got together to form a “friends” group, with one main mission—to protect, preserve and restore the Massapequa Preserve."
