Mountain Mint

Home - Native Plants - Mountain Mint

Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum sp.)

Open field native will establish a colony, and won't take over. We initially grew two varieties: one narrow leaved and one wider leaved. The wider leaved mint is subject to powdery mildew in humid conditions and prefers richer soils.  The narrow leaved mint is better suited for dryer conditions.  It naturally hybridized:  its powdery mildew resistant and tolerant of dry soils.   We sell the hybrid (QP-8312) and the narrow leaved mint.

Summary

Classification: herbaceous perennial
Characteristics: delicate and not invasive (as in cultivated mints)
Habitat: open clearings in field or meadow
Wildlife Benefit: attracts bees, butterflies, pollinators
Bloom Period:  early summer, white flowers
Height: 2-3 ft
Tolerances: sun to dappled, deer resistant, dry soils
