Quality Parks is doing more to stop tick bites by revealing who is doing what where, from existing park conditions to  park resources taking action.

The Stories They Tell Us - At the PJ Farmers Market

A young man reached down for his golf ball in the rough and ticks swarmed up his arm. He ran home and jumped in his swimming pool.  These were lone star tick nymphs, during late summer.  Irrigated golf courses add more moisture to the grounds.  Tick populations thrive in moister conditions.
An emergency medical responder walked over to my vendor booth, picked up a can of tick spray, and said, "This is for my people." She handed me cash.  I didn't connect the dots until the following day. She wasn't talking about her own safety but the homeless she cared for in what would later become protected open space.
Many utility workers pause at Quality Parks vendor booth to learn about tick bite prevention and to purchase tick bite sprays and treated socks. I'm surprised at how many don't know about ticks, nor how to protect themselves from tick bites. What about employers providing education, standard operating procedures, and supplies to protect field crews?

. . .  Park Resources You Should Know About. . .

It's one thing to put on all your tick gear when going hiking in the pine barrens, but it's quite another thing to put on all this gear every time you step outside of your house to take out the trash, pick up the mail, garden, and an array of other chores. The North Fork,  has become very hazardous. Their Deer Management Coalition is advocating for humane deer overpopulation control methods. And Center for Environmental Education and Discovery (CEED) is repopulating Long Island with bobwhite quail to forage on ticks.

Ticks were the worst of any experience that I have had in my whole life. Truly unprecedented.
At one point I stopped every 5 minutes to brush dozens off my shoes and pants (overgrown trail perfect for questing). Despite being doused in repellant the ticks did not seem to care one bit, gladly crawling over shoes and pants that had been dripping with tick repellant spray. I could not even find a place to sit and fill out my survey questionnaire without constantly being swarmed. All in all, by the end of it, I removed well over 60+ ticks from my person (and I stopped counting quite early on, so there is no telling how many really). - Andy-V.
While updating  our content page on Tick Bite Prevention,  we learned about a direct injection, irrigation system applying cedar oil. Autobugg couldn't be reached. Dave, at Cedarcide, estimated tank spraying is most likely 1 to 12 dilution; while the "direct inject system" is most likely 1 to 1000.

Autobugg is a company off Long Island.
After a more local internet search followed up with a cold call to Nick from Mr.Mosquito (who tank sprays with cedar oil), Quality Parks learned that Nick knew about direct injection, irrigation systems, and  had always wanted to try it, but wasn't sure he could do it legally on Long Island.
Quality Parks contacted Seth Squicciarino from Suffolk County Legislature Kara Hahn's office, he suggested we contact NYSDEC.
It would be more likely that a business sell and install the system for the homeowner and then the homeowner controls the system. Thus it is not a commercial pesticide application." - NYSDEC Pesticide Control Specialist
We've stepped back from searching for a test site to instead contact Suffolk County Vector Control, regarding effectiveness and  application rates.
