Suffolk County Cyberattack Foils Hunting Information

The Suffolk County cyberattack was months ago; their website is essentially still down. Local residents are being referred to Suffolk County Parks Facebook page regarding hunting and safety issues.

Yet, only local residents with Facebook accounts who also know how to search for posts related to hunting can find this information.

Quality Parks contacted Suffolk County representatives offering our consultation services to create a deer hunting page similar to the one used by NYSDEC.

NYSDEC provides an easy to review page for hunting,  while Suffolk County Parks directed us to their Facebook page via an explanatory phone call.  From what we gathered, deer hunting season begins in  Oct/Nov and runs through end of January.  And what we hadn't realized was the extent hunting opportunities. Updating our own pages with which parks allow hunting became a daunting task.

More broadly speaking, Quality Parks  is now more concerned that expanding hunting opportunities means limited public access to favorite parks. We have yet to discern what parks allow mixed use recreation.   And how the general public and hunters are educated on ways  to minimize their impacts  on each other's recreational experience.

Even at the most basic level, Suffolk County urgently needs to at least match what the NYSDEC Hunting Information page provides: an overview map, a table listing of where hunting is allowed, and direct  links to detailed park maps. Quality Parks could easily organize and provide this information, while Suffolk County's existing IT staff and paid contractors continue to work on more pressing issues. Quality Parks is familiar with local parks and web page construction and design, currently maintaining LI Parks & Park Resource pages.  But in order to accomplish this task, we would also need to be paid for services rendered.

All that we can do for now is to inform county representatives (done yesterday) about the limitations of using Facebook, and to convey to the public some of the information we directly found on this social media.
