Showy Goldenrod

Home - Native Plants -  Showy Goldenrod

Showy Goldenrod (Solidago speciosa)

A late flowering perennial, great for wood edges and meadow. Last bright yellow flower of the season. Does well in dry sandy soils.  Allergy free because it's pollinated by bees and is not wind pollinated. We collected our seeds on a cold day in November, as this is a really late bloomer.

Summary

Classification:  herbaceous perennial
Characteristics:  pollen isn't airborne; it's sticks to pollinator, and thus doesn't contribute to allergies
Habitat: woodland, openings, fields, grasslands, clearings
Wildlife Benefit:   bees, butterflies, moths, pollinators
Bloom Period:  October-November
Height:  3-5 feet tall
Tolerances: full sun, moderate to dry soils
