Tickseed

Home - Native Plants - Tickseed

Tickseed (Coreopsis verticillata) *

Prefers sandy soils, very drought tolerant. Seeds feed birds & small animals. Deer forage in winter, maybe saving favorites.  Tickseeds don't attract ticks!

Summary

Classification:  herbaceous perennial
Characteristics: adds attractive early season color
Habitat: dry open fields, will be outcompeted by more dominant plants
Wildlife Benefit:  attracts butterflies, bees, pollinators, seeds beneficial for birds and small animals, provide food source for deer
Bloom Period: June-July
Height: 2-3 ft
Tolerances: full sun to partial shade, drought tolerant

* Noteworthy: This isn't native to Long Island. We're working on getting a LI local coreopsis, or instead an early spring bloomer. So far we have found Coreopsis rosea to be a native alternative and are looking for sources.
